.com vs .in vs .co.in: Which Domain Should an Indian Business Choose?
You’ve found a good name for your business. Now the domain search shows a choice: .com, .in, .co.in and a dozen others. Which one should you pick, and does it really matter?
It does matter, though perhaps not in the way you expect. Here’s a clear, practical comparison for businesses in India.
First, what is a domain extension?
The extension (technically a “top-level domain” or TLD) is the part after the dot. There are two main kinds:
- Generic extensions such as .com, .net and .org, used worldwide.
- Country-code extensions such as .in for India, .uk for the United Kingdom or .ae for the UAE.
India’s .in domain is managed by NIXI (the National Internet Exchange of India). Under .in there are also second-level options such as .co.in (commercial), .firm.in, .net.in, .org.in and .ind.in, plus restricted ones like .gov.in and .ac.in that are only for government and academic bodies.
.com: the global default
Choose .com if: you serve customers outside India, plan to, or simply want the most familiar extension. Most people instinctively type “.com” when they guess a website address.
The catch: because .com is so popular, short and simple names are often already taken, which pushes people towards long or awkward names.
.in: clearly Indian
Choose .in if: your customers are mainly in India. It signals immediately that you are an Indian business, which many local customers find reassuring, and good names are often still available.
A .in domain also gives search engines a clear signal that your website is aimed at India, useful for local businesses such as shops, clinics, showrooms and service providers.
.co.in: the commercial variant
.co.in works and signals a commercial Indian entity, but it is longer and less familiar to customers than .in or .com. People are more likely to drop the “.co” when typing it. Choose it mainly if both your .in and .com are unavailable, or buy it as a protective extra.
Side-by-side comparison
| Extension | Best for | Signals | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| .com | Global or national brands | Established, international | Good names often taken |
| .in | Businesses serving India | Indian, local | Less obvious for overseas customers |
| .co.in | Commercial Indian entities | Indian business | Longer; people may drop “.co” |
| New extensions (.shop, .store, .online…) | Specific niches | Modern, specific | Less familiar; can look less trustworthy to some customers |
Does the extension affect SEO?
Less than most people think. Google ranks pages mainly on their content, usefulness, speed and reputation. What the extension does do:
- .in tells search engines your site is targeted at India, helpful if India is your market.
- .com is treated as generic, so it can serve any country.
Either way, a well-built website with clear content will outperform a poorly built one on any extension. What matters far more is what’s on your website. See why business websites don’t get enquiries.
Should you buy both .com and .in?
If your brand name is valuable to you, buying both is often worth it. You pick one as your main website and redirect the other to it. This:
- Catches customers who type the “wrong” extension
- Stops competitors or squatters from using your name
- Keeps your options open if you expand abroad later
Make sure only one version is your main website, and the other redirects to it: two separate copies of the same site confuse customers and search engines.
Our simple recommendation
- Local or India-focused business: .in is a great choice. Buy the .com too if it’s available and affordable.
- National brand, exporter or online business: .com as your main domain, plus .in for protection.
- Both taken? Consider adjusting the name before settling for an obscure extension. See how to choose a domain name for your business.
